Dear Alexander,

My teachers always hand out chocolate candies for Valentine's Day. I can't eat the chocolate, though, because it might have peanuts. Alexander, how can I stay safe during this holiday?

Parties or celebrations at school can be tricky to manage when you have a food allergy. You need to be careful and thoughtful, because you want to participate in class without putting yourself in danger.

The easiest way to do this is to ask your parents to tell your teacher about your food allergies. Most people understand the situation immediately and sympathize. If your teacher does not seem interested in helping plan a safe party, you should consider working with your parents to bring your own snacks that you know are safe.

Whatever you do, think ahead! You don’t want to wake up on Valentine’s Day and realize you still need a plan.

Good luck!

Your friend,

Alexander Signature
