Dear Alexander,

My class is going on a field trip soon and my mom can't go this time. We will be having a picnic lunch on the field trip. My mom has come to every other field trip I've been on and I am not very happy about going without her there to give me medicine in case I need it.

I understand why you might be nervous about this field trip. Your mom has always been there in the past, and that’s a big comfort! If she thinks it’s safe for you to go, though, you should definitely go and just have fun! Remember to be smart about your food allergy on this trip, just like you are every day.

Work with your mom to pack your lunch, eat only the items that you and she has packed (no food trading with friends!), and wash your hands before and after you eat. Ask your mom and your teacher who will be carrying your medicine and your Food Allergy Action Plan (which are instructions from your doctor on how to handle an allergic reaction) on the field trip, and be sure you know who to go to in case you don’t feel well.

Good luck!

Your friend,

Alexander Signature
